Times Tables Test (2–12)

Want to know if your child has really got the times tables down? You do not need a worksheet or a stopwatch of your own — KidsDoMath has a free, built-in Speed Challenge that checks multiplication fact fluency from the 2 through 12 times tables in one minute, right in the browser, with no sign-up.

It works like a real fluency test: your child answers as many multiplication facts as they can in 60 seconds, and the app tracks a personal best so progress is easy to see over time — no printing, no grading, no account needed.

How the Test Works

Open the practice app and choose the Speed Challenge mode. A 60-second timer starts, and your child answers as many multiplication facts as possible before time runs out — each correct answer counts toward the final score. The app saves the highest score reached so far as a personal best, so every attempt is a chance to beat last time rather than a one-shot grade.

As a rough guide, most kids who have practiced a times table regularly for a few weeks can answer one fact every 3–4 seconds. Younger kids or those newer to a table will naturally score lower — that is useful information, not a failing grade. Use a low score to decide which facts need more untimed practice, not as a reason to worry.

Practice Before Testing

A timed test works best after some relaxed, untimed practice — cramming right before a timer starts usually backfires. Build fluency first with Multiplication Practice (visual, spaced-repetition drills with no clock) or the full set of multiplication games. For a single stubborn table, try a dedicated page like the 2 times table, 5 times table or 10 times table before coming back to test.

Common Questions

What score is good on a times tables test?

It depends on grade level, but a good rule of thumb for the Speed Challenge is roughly one correct answer every 3–4 seconds once a child has practiced a times table for a few weeks. Early on, accuracy matters far more than speed — a slow, correct answer is worth more than a fast guess.

How often should a child take a times tables test?

Once every week or two is plenty. Testing too often turns practice into pressure. Use the test to spot which facts need more work, then spend the days in between on untimed practice for those specific facts.

Can timed tests stress kids out?

Yes, for some children a countdown clock can trigger real anxiety and make them freeze on facts they actually know. If a timed test feels stressful, skip it and stick to untimed practice for a while — read more in our guide to math anxiety in children.

Is the times tables test free?

Yes. The Speed Challenge and every practice mode on KidsDoMath are 100% free, with no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up required.
