Exponent Games for Kids (Grades 5–8)
Play Exponent Engine (Grades 5–6)Exponent games practice powers, squares, roots, power rules and scientific notation. These free games cover grades 5 to 8.
An exponent is a short way to write repeated multiplication. Powers are used in area, growth and science. These games let kids build powers, roots and scientific notation, so the rules make sense.
7 Exponent Games
Easiest first. Each card shows its grade range.
- Exponent EngineGrades 5–6Pull the multiplier lever to build powers, lay rows to build squares, and arrange cells into perfect squares to find roots.
- Signed Order OpsGrades 7–8Tap operation chips to collapse an expression with negatives, exponents and nested parentheses in any order you like — a wrong order leaves a visibly wrong value, and LOCK IN checks the final number.
- Power MergeGrades 7–8Drop each tile into the column where it touches its equal power — 8, 2·2·2 and 2³ + 2³ only merge once you read them as the right power of 2 (2³ + 2³ makes 2⁴, not 2⁶).
- Cube Root CoveGrade 8Drag a cube's side up and down until its volume hits the target — the side you stop on is the cube root; then solve x³ = p and trap ∛n between two whole numbers.
- Magnitude MeterGrade 8Slide a quantity onto a log-scaled meter where every band is ×10 — the band is its power of ten, the spot inside the band its leading digit — then stretch a bracket between two quantities to read how many times bigger one is.
- Power Rules PlantGrade 8Pull the result tower up or below the line until it holds the right number of factor blocks — joined stacks add, cancelled pairs subtract, copied stacks multiply the exponent.
- Sci Notation ScopeGrade 8Slide the decimal point along the digits — every place it moves ticks the power of ten — to zoom standard numbers into c × 10ⁿ and back, then span the zoom ruler from an atom to the Sun to read how many powers of ten apart they are.
Common Questions
How do I teach exponents to my child?
Start with repeated multiplication. Write 2 × 2 × 2 and say it has three factors of 2. Show the short form, 2³. Next, build squares with tiles: 3² is a 3 by 3 square of 9 tiles. Then learn powers of 10. Last, show roots as the undo of powers.
What grade do kids learn exponents?
Powers of 10 appear in grade 5. Whole-number exponents are grade 6. Square roots, cube roots, integer exponents and scientific notation are grade 8.
What is a common exponent mistake?
Kids often read 2³ as 2 × 3, which is 6. The exponent counts the factors. So 2³ is 2 × 2 × 2, which is 8. Always write out the repeated multiplication until the habit is firm.
Which exponent game should my child start with?
For grades 5 to 6, try Exponent Engine. For grades 7 to 8, try Power Merge or Signed Order Ops. For grade 8, try Cube Root Cove, Power Rules Plant or Sci Notation Scope.
Are these exponent games free?
Yes, free. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up. Open a game in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
