Common Questions

What is an easy way to calculate a tip in your head?

Find 10 percent by moving the decimal one place left, then adjust. For a 40 dollar bill, 10 percent is 4 dollars. Double it for 20 percent (8 dollars) or add half of it for 15 percent (6 dollars).

How do you calculate sales tax?

Sales tax is a percent of the price. Multiply the price by the tax rate written as a decimal (8 percent is 0.08) and add the result to the price. Or multiply once by 1.08 to get the total directly.

What is simple interest?

Interest is the money a bank pays you on savings, or that you pay on a loan. Simple interest is principal times rate times time. 100 dollars at 5 percent for 3 years earns 15 dollars. Compound interest then earns interest on the interest as well.

What grade learns about tips, tax and interest?

Percent applications such as tips and tax are standard in grades 6 and 7, and simple interest in grades 7 and 8. Each card shows its grade range.
