Math Word Problem Games (Grades 2–8)
Math word problem games turn story problems into things kids do: spend a budget, make change, split a bill or beat a clock. They are for kids in roughly grades 2 to 8, and every game is free to play in the browser with no sign-up and no ads.
Because answers are checked instantly, kids learn to read the question, choose the operation and check whether the answer makes sense, which is the real skill behind word problems.
13 Word Problem Games
- Word Problem WharfGrades 3–5A story lands at the wharf — spot the key word to pick the right operation, then compute the one-step answer.
- Piggy PlanGrades 2–4Plan your savings: work out the total after a few weeks, how many weeks to reach a goal, or how much to save each week.
- Savings Goal SummitGrades 3–5Save the same amount every week and climb the money mountain to the goal flag.
- Budget BossGrades 3–5Checkout rush! Groceries roll toward the gate — BUY what fits your wallet, SKIP what doesn't. Over-spend and the card declines. Land the budget to level up!
- Change MakerGrades 2–4Count up from the price to what the customer paid and hand back the exact change with coins and bills.
- Price DetectiveGrades 3–5One line on the receipt is wrong — find it! Check each price with your magnifying glass and tap the culprit.
- Best Buy BazaarGrades 4–6Split each price into equal per-item shares to spot the real bargain — even when the bigger pack costs more.
- Discount DepotGrades 5–6Clearance sale! Work out the sale price, the amount you save, and even the original price from the sticker.
- Tip & Tax TillGrades 5–6Stack 10% and 1% chunks of a bill to build a tip or sales tax and read the new total off the money scale.
- Fraction FeastGrades 3–5Cater the party by fractions: serve a fraction of a tray of treats, or count all the slices in a mixed number — then plate exactly that many.
- Division DashGrades 3–5A treat delivery needs sharing — work out the equal split and send the delivery.
- Speed SplitGrades 5–6Distance = speed × time — fill in the missing one, then watch the car drive the trip out hop by hop to check.
- Graph Story QuestGrade 8Read a short story (a walk, a filling tub, a cooling soup) and sketch its graph by dragging the dot that ends each part up, down or level — steeper means faster, and every sketch that tells the story is accepted.
Common Questions
How do I teach my child to solve math word problems?
Use the same four steps every time. Read the problem twice, then underline the question being asked. Decide what is happening in the story (joining, taking away, sharing, comparing) to pick the operation. Solve it, then check that the answer makes sense in the story and has the right units. Drawing a quick picture or bar model before calculating helps most kids.
Do key words like "total" and "left" work?
Only sometimes. Words like "total" or "altogether" often mean add, and "left" often means subtract, but tricky problems reverse them ("Sam gave away 5 and has 7 left. How many did he start with?" is an addition). Key words are a hint, not a rule. It is more reliable to picture the story and ask what is happening to the quantities.
What grades do these word problem games cover?
Roughly grades 2 to 8. Each card shows its own grade range. Younger kids start with saving, change and simple shopping stories; middle grades move to fractions, division and unit prices; older kids tackle discounts, tax and tips, speed and distance, and reading graphs.
Are interactive word problems better than worksheets?
They can be. A game gives instant feedback, so a wrong approach is corrected within seconds instead of after a whole page, and the story setting (a shop, a budget, a race) gives the numbers a reason to exist. Worksheets are still good for writing out full reasoning, so many families mix both.
Are these word problem games free?
Yes. Every game is free with no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up. They run in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
