Multiplication Games for 2nd Grade

Play Equal Groups Grove (Grades 2–3)

Grade 2 multiplication games build the ideas that come before times tables: equal groups, arrays and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.

In most US schools, children meet multiplication formally in grade 3. Grade 2 lays the groundwork. Kids count equal groups, describe rows and columns in an array, and skip count. A child who can see 3 rows of 4 as 4 + 4 + 4 is ready for 3 × 4.

Common Questions

Should a 2nd grader learn multiplication?

Yes, as ideas rather than memorized facts. Grade 2 standards ask kids to add equal groups, use arrays up to 5 rows and 5 columns, and skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s. Memorizing the times tables usually comes in grade 3.

How do I introduce multiplication to my 2nd grader?

Start with real objects. Put 4 groups of 3 crackers on a plate and ask how many there are. Then draw the same groups as dots in rows. Then write it as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3. Only after that, show that 4 × 3 is a short way to write the same thing.

Are these grade 2 multiplication games free?

Yes. They are free, with no ads and no sign-up. They run in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
