Reading Scales Games for Kids (Grades 1–7)
Play Mass Market (Grades 2–4)Reading scales games practice reading the measuring tools kids meet in school: rulers, weighing scales, thermometers, measuring jugs and graduated cylinders. Grades 1 to 7.
Most mistakes with a measuring tool come from the scale, not the maths. Kids assume every small line is worth 1, or they read the wrong side of a needle. These games make them work out what each tick is worth before they read, on dials, thermometers, jugs and cylinders.
8 Reading Scales Games
Easiest first. Each card shows its grade range.
- Weather StationGrades 1–3Run a kids' weather station: read real thermometers, post the forecast, drag the mercury to tomorrow's temperature, and dress Sunny for the day.
- Ruler RangerGrades 2–4Objects march across the ruler — read each length before it escapes! Watch for the classic trap: the start isn't always at zero (end − start).
- Balance BayGrades 2–4Weigh the catch on a balance scale: add kilo-weights until the beam sits level to find a mass, or make one pan heavier or lighter.
- Liquid LabGrades 2–4Pour and measure capacity in ml: fill a measuring jug to a target, read the level off the scale, and combine two pours into one total.
- Mass MarketGrades 2–4Read the needle to the mass, weigh up heavier versus lighter, or stack weights until the pans balance.
- Temp TrekGrades 3–5Read and set a thermometer in °C — including below zero, where the numbers go negative. Track temperatures that rise and drop across the zero line.
- Scale ReaderGrades 3–5Inspection rush! Instruments hit the bench — read the needle between the ticks before the timer sweeps. APPROVED stamps for sharp eyes.
- Graduated CylinderGrades 3–7Read a graduated cylinder at the bottom of the meniscus, work out what each small line is worth, fill to a line, and find a stone's volume by displacement.
Common Questions
How do I teach my child to read a scale?
Find two numbered lines next to each other. Count the spaces between them. Divide the difference by the number of spaces to get what one small line is worth. For example, if 20 and 30 have 5 spaces between them, each line is 2. Then count on from the lower number.
What grade do kids learn to read scales?
Kids start reading rulers in centimetres and inches in grade 2. Reading scales for mass and liquid volume in grams, kilograms and litres is grade 3 in most US schools. Thermometers with negative temperatures come up again in grade 6. Graduated cylinders are used in science from about grade 5.
How do you read a graduated cylinder?
Put your eyes level with the liquid. Water curves down in the middle; this curve is called the meniscus. Read the line at the bottom of the curve, not the top edge. Check what each small line is worth first, because it is often 2 mL or 0.5 mL, not 1 mL.
What is a common mistake when reading a weighing scale?
Kids often count each small line as 1, even when the scale goes up in 5s, 10s or 100s. On a kitchen scale with a line every 50 g, three lines past 200 g is 350 g, not 203 g. Work out the value of one line before you read the needle.
Are these reading scales games free?
Yes. They are free, with no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up. They run in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
