Common Questions

How do I teach rounding to my child?

Use a number line first. Put the number between two tens, such as 43 between 40 and 50, and ask which end is closer. Next, show the shortcut. Look at the digit to the right of the place you round to. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, round down.

What grade do kids learn rounding?

Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 is grade 3. Rounding larger whole numbers to any place is grade 4. Rounding decimals is usually grade 5. Rounding is used again in estimation for years after.

What is a common rounding mistake?

Kids sometimes round more than once. For 149 to the nearest hundred, they round 149 up to 150, then up to 200. The answer is 100. Only the tens digit matters, and it is 4, so round down. Look at one digit and round one time.

Which rounding game should my child start with?

For grades 3 to 4, try Round Defense or Rounding Estimate Sum. Rounding Ridge suits grades 3 to 5, and it asks kids to read the deciding digit. For grades 4 to 6, try Rounding Reef, which rounds decimals.

Are these rounding games free?

Yes, they are free. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up. The games work in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.
