Place Value Games for Kids (Grades 1–6)
Play Place Value Blocks Bay (Grades 1–2)Place value games teach what each digit is worth: ones, tens, hundreds and decimal places. These free games cover grades 1 to 6, from base-ten blocks to decimals.
Place value is the base of all number work. Kids who know that the 3 in 342 means 300 can add, subtract, round and compare with confidence. These games let kids build numbers with blocks, columns and expanded form, so the idea is seen before it is written.
21 Place Value Games
Easiest first. Each card shows its grade range.
- More Less MeadowGrades 1–2Tap a cube for one and a rod for ten to build one-more, one-less, ten-more, and ten-less with base-ten blocks.
- Place Value Blocks BayGrades 1–2Build a two-digit number from tens-rods and ones-cubes — the pile of blocks is the number.
- Number Word MatchGrades 1–2Read a number's written word and match it to the numeral — or build a number from its tens and ones words.
- Hundred Chart HuntGrades 1–3Slide a marker around the 1–100 chart — down is 10 more, across is 1 more — to hunt down the number.
- Place Value PortGrades 2–4The crane lights one container on the pier — what is that digit really worth?
- Regroup RallyGrades 2–4Subtract big numbers column by column — borrow a ten when the top digit is too small.
- Expanded Form ExpressGrades 2–4Break a number into its place-value parts (342 = 300 + 40 + 2) — or build it back.
- Greatest Least LabGrades 2–4A scramble of number tiles and one rule — tap them in order, smallest-first or biggest-first, and watch the lineup build.
- Place Value ForgeGrades 2–4Stack color-coded base-ten blocks into ones, tens and hundreds silos to forge target numbers. Build numbers, read the silos, and regroup ten of one place into one of the next.
- Number Line NavigatorGrades 2–4Pilot a probe along the number line: glide it to an exact value, and round numbers by parking on the nearest ten or hundred — the line shows which landmark is closer.
- Number DetectiveGrades 2–4Clues arrive one at a time — stamp out every number each clue rules out until a single suspect remains, then make the arrest.
- Column CrunchGrades 2–4Stack the numbers and crunch them one column at a time — ones, tens, hundreds — carrying and borrowing across the line to build each answer digit.
- Place-Value CentipedeGrades 2–4Aim your blaster at the digit segment in the right place and fire — a blasted digit becomes a 0 mushroom that holds its place, so 347 turns into 307.
- Round DefenseGrades 3–4Numbered meteors rain on a row of cities labelled with tens, hundreds or thousands — tap the city each number rounds to and your interceptor launches from it to meet the meteor.
- Rounding RidgeGrades 3–5A number-boulder rests between two camps — read the deciding digit and send it to the nearer one.
- Array ArchitectGrades 3–5Build big multiplications with the area model — split into tens + ones, multiply each part, then add.
- Roman Numeral RoadGrades 3–5Read Roman numerals into numbers, match a number to its numeral, or build one symbol by symbol.
- Rounding RapidsGrades 3–5Watch a number float on the rapids between two markers, decide which it drifts toward, and steer it to the nearer multiple.
- Decimal ColumnsGrades 3–5Steer and cycle falling sticks of three decimal jewels so three equal values line up and clear, however they are written — 0.5, 0.50, 5 tenths or 50/100.
- Decimal DuelGrades 4–6Two decimals face off — pick <, =, or > and see which one really wins.
- Decimal LabGrades 4–6Compose decimals from tenths and hundredths and watch a magnitude bar fill. Build exact decimals, beat a threshold, and land between two values — seeing exactly why 0.5 beats 0.45.
Common Questions
How do I teach place value to my child?
Start with objects. Bundle ten sticks or beans into one group of ten, and keep single ones loose. Next, draw tens as long bars and ones as dots. Then write the number and say what each digit means: 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones. Move to hundreds only when tens feel easy.
What grade do kids learn place value?
Tens and ones start in grade 1. Hundreds follow in grade 2. Multi-digit place value, up to the millions, is grade 4. Decimals (tenths and hundredths) are grades 4 to 5. Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 is grade 3.
What is a common place value mistake?
Many kids ignore the zero in a number like 305 and call it thirty-five. A zero is a placeholder. It shows that a place is empty, and it keeps the other digits in the right spots. Write 305 as 300 + 0 + 5 and say each part out loud.
Which place value game should my child start with?
For grades 1 to 2, try Place Value Blocks Bay or More Less Meadow. Both use tens-rods and ones-cubes. For grades 2 to 4, try Place Value Forge, which adds hundreds and regrouping. For grades 4 to 6, try Decimal Lab, which builds decimals from tenths and hundredths.
Are these place value games free?
Yes, all of them are free. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up. The games run in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
