Number Line Games for Kids (Grades 1–8)
Play Number Line Jumps (Grades 1–2)Number line games practice placing, reading and jumping along a number line. They cover whole numbers, fractions, negatives and roots, for grades 1 to 8.
A number line shows that numbers have order and distance. It is one picture that works for counting, adding, fractions and negative numbers. In these games, kids hop, steer and place markers, so they see the size of each number.
22 Number Line Games
Easiest first. Each card shows its grade range.
- Count QuestGrades 1–2Herd critters into the pen to hit the goal — count an exact number, or make it more, fewer, or in between, with a number line to guide you.
- Number Line JumpsGrades 1–2Hop a frog along the number line to add and subtract — each jump draws an arc, so you can see the math!
- Ten FrogGrades 1–2Hop the frog across the river one numbered turtle per lane — each +2 or −1 moves it along the number line, and it gets home only if the hops land exactly on 10.
- Skip TripGrades 1–3Hop a frog across lily pads, skip-counting by 2s, 5s and 10s — each tap jumps by the skip size to land on the next, missing, or total number.
- Number Line NavigatorGrades 2–4Pilot a probe along the number line: glide it to an exact value, and round numbers by parking on the nearest ten or hundred — the line shows which landmark is closer.
- Ruler RangerGrades 2–4Objects march across the ruler — read each length before it escapes! Watch for the classic trap: the start isn't always at zero (end − start).
- Round DefenseGrades 3–4Numbered meteors rain on a row of cities labelled with tens, hundreds or thousands — tap the city each number rounds to and your interceptor launches from it to meet the meteor.
- Rounding RapidsGrades 3–5Watch a number float on the rapids between two markers, decide which it drifts toward, and steer it to the nearer multiple.
- Fraction FrontierGrades 3–5Chart fractions on a trail number line: plot a fraction, compare which is bigger, and add fractions by hopping — with equal fractions landing on the very same spot.
- Temp TrekGrades 3–5Read and set a thermometer in °C — including below zero, where the numbers go negative. Track temperatures that rise and drop across the zero line.
- Benchmark Fraction BayGrades 3–5Read a fraction bar against 0, ½, and 1 — is it nearest which landmark, and is it more or less than a half?
- Sequence RacerGrades 3–6The number sequence is your race track: crack the rule (+4, −3, ×2, growing jumps), tap the next number and your car zooms forward — beat the pace car!
- Rounding ReefGrades 4–6A decimal is stuck between two round numbers — find the halfway flag and tap the nearer one.
- Inequality IsleGrades 4–6Place the boundary of an inequality on the number line, find the smallest solution, or count how many whole numbers make it true.
- Absolute Value AbyssGrades 5–6Count the jumps from zero — absolute value is just distance, so |−4| = 4.
- Integer IslandGrades 5–6Add and subtract positives and negatives, crossing zero on the number line, then drop your buoy on the answer — integer arithmetic made visual.
- Integer CrossingGrades 6–7Hop across a river of drifting lily pads marked +3, −5, −(−2) and ×(−1), choosing the pads whose steps make your running total land exactly on the far-bank gate.
- Inequality EngineGrade 7Undo each operation on both sides of a two-step inequality, flip the symbol when you divide by a negative, then drag the endpoint, set it open or closed and shade the solution set on the number line.
- Rational RankerGrade 7Slide flags labelled −3/4, 0.6 and −1 1/2 along one number line to their exact spots — placing them IS ordering them, and the tolerance tightens every level.
- Rational RoverGrade 7Drive a rover one signed jump card at a time — negative fractions and decimals, left and right across zero — so the sum is simply where it stops.
- Sign Switch StationGrade 7Stack signed jumps from 0 and throw the REVERSE switch for a negative multiplier — the pod lands on the product, and two reversals face forward again, so (−)(−) = (+).
- Root RangeGrade 8Drag a tiled square until its area hits the target so its side reads as the root, trap √n between two perfect-square tiles on the number line, then zoom the unit into tenths and slide the marker to the tenth whose square lands nearest n.
Common Questions
How do I teach number lines to my child?
Draw a line on paper or with chalk, and mark 0 to 10. Let your child hop along it with a toy. For 3 + 4, start at 3 and hop 4 times. Then ask what each hop is worth. Later, change the scale so each space is 2 or 5, and add fractions and negatives.
What grade do kids learn number lines?
Most US schools use number lines from grade 1 for adding and subtracting. Fractions on a number line are grade 3. Negative numbers on a number line are grade 6. Rational numbers and inequalities on a number line are grades 6 to 7.
What is a common number line mistake?
Kids often count the tick marks instead of the spaces between them. They also assume each space is 1. Look at two labeled marks and divide the gap. If 0 and 10 have 5 spaces between them, each space is 2. For jumps, count the spaces, not the marks.
Which number line game should my child start with?
For grades 1 to 2, try Number Line Jumps or Skip Trip. For grades 2 to 4, try Number Line Navigator. For grades 5 to 6, try Integer Island, which crosses zero. For grade 7, try Rational Rover, which uses negative fractions and decimals.
Are these number line games free?
Yes. Every game is free to play. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no account to make. Open a game in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer.
