Subtraction Games for Kids (Grades 1–4)
Play Subtract Squad (Grades 1–3)Subtraction games teach kids to take away and find the difference, from facts within 20 to multi-digit subtraction with regrouping. These free games are for grades 1 to 4.
Subtraction is the opposite of addition, and kids who see that link learn it faster: 13 − 5 is the same question as “5 plus what makes 13?” These games use number lines, fact families, columns and making change, so kids practise taking away, counting up and regrouping. They are free, with no ads and no login.

- Number Line JumpsGrades 1–2Hop a frog along the number line to add and subtract — each jump draws an arc, so you can see the math!Play
- Ten FrogGrades 1–2Hop the frog across the river one numbered turtle per lane — each +2 or −1 moves it along the number line, and it gets home only if the hops land exactly on 10.Play
- Subtract SquadGrades 1–3A squad lands, the chopper airlifts some away — count who's left and dial the radio to match.Play
- Fact Family ForgeGrades 1–3Dial the hidden number of a bond triangle and watch it forge all four related facts at once.Play
- Regroup RallyGrades 2–4Subtract big numbers column by column — borrow a ten when the top digit is too small.Play
- Change MakerGrades 2–4Count up from the price to what the customer paid and hand back the exact change with coins and bills.Play
- Cash RegisterGrades 2–4Customers are lining up! Build each one's exact money in the tray and ring it up before their patience runs out — change counts up the real cashier way.Play
- Column CrunchGrades 2–4Stack the numbers and crunch them one column at a time — ones, tens, hundreds — carrying and borrowing across the line to build each answer digit.Play
Common Questions
What grade do kids learn subtraction?
Kindergarten takes away within 10 using objects. Grade 1 subtracts within 20. By the end of grade 2, kids should know the facts within 20 from memory and subtract within 100 with ease, using regrouping. Grade 3 subtracts within 1,000, and grade 4 uses the standard column method for larger numbers.
How do I teach subtraction facts to my child?
Use addition. For 12 − 9, count up from 9: one more makes 10, two more makes 12, so the answer is 3. Use fact families: if 3 + 5 = 8, then 8 − 5 = 3 and 8 − 3 = 5. For facts like 14 − 6, go back to ten first: 14 − 4 = 10, then 10 − 2 = 8.
What is a common subtraction mistake?
Kids often take the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column. For 52 − 27 they do 7 − 2 and write 35. The fix is regrouping. Trade one ten for ten ones, so 52 becomes 4 tens and 12 ones. Then 12 − 7 = 5 and 4 − 2 = 2, so the answer is 25. Check by adding: 25 + 27 = 52.
Which subtraction game should my child start with?
For grade 1, try Number Line Jumps, Ten Frog or Subtract Squad. Fact Family Forge links subtraction to addition. For regrouping in grades 2 to 4, try Regroup Rally or Column Crunch. For real-life practice, Change Maker and Cash Register use subtraction to make change.
