Math Pattern Games for Kids (Grades 1–8)
Play Pattern Picnic (Grade 1)Math pattern games practice finding the rule in repeating shapes, number sequences and growth patterns. These free games cover grades 1 to 8.
Patterns are the start of algebra. A child who can find a rule can predict what comes next. These games begin with repeating shapes and move to number rules, tables and growth graphs.
15 Math Pattern Games
Easiest first. Each card shows its grade range.
- Pattern PicnicGrade 1Snacks line up in a repeating beat — drag the missing snack onto the empty plate before the ants nibble it, then build whole patterns yourself.
- Pattern SimonGrade 1Watch the Simon pads light up along a repeating pattern of shapes, then tap the pads that keep the pattern going — AB, then ABC and AAB, then the missing pieces in the middle.
- Count-By CoveGrades 1–2A frog crosses a cove on numbered lily pads that skip-count by 2s, 5s, and 10s — tap the pad that fills the gap.
- Skip SnakeGrades 1–2Steer the snake to bite the number that comes next — counting on by 1s, then skipping by 2s, 5s and 10s — and watch its body grow into the count.
- Pattern ParadeGrades 1–3The parade marches in a repeating beat — tap the float that keeps the pattern going.
- Hundred Chart HuntGrades 1–3Slide a marker around the 1–100 chart — down is 10 more, across is 1 more — to hunt down the number.
- Pattern WeaverGrades 1–4Beat the shuttle to the gap! Tap the bead that keeps the pattern going before the shuttle lands — finished strands weave into a growing ribbon.
- Pattern GardenGrades 2–3Every flowerbed grows by a rule — plant the petals for the next row and water it in; rule-stones and two-step magic rules wait deeper in the garden.
- Sequence SprintGrades 2–4A robot conveyor belt rolls numbers past — spot the pattern and stamp the missing crate before it rolls off.
- Sequence RacerGrades 3–6The number sequence is your race track: crack the rule (+4, −3, ×2, growing jumps), tap the next number and your car zooms forward — beat the pace car!
- Function FactoryGrades 4–6Number pods ride a neon conveyor through machines like ×2 and +3, morphing as they go. Tune the gates to fill each order, reverse-engineer inputs, and crack mystery rules.
- Input Output TableGrades 4–6Feed numbers through a rule machine and fill the table — find outputs, work out missing inputs, or crack the hidden rule.
- Nth Term NookGrade 6Read the growing tile pattern — step-size and base — to crack the rule and predict a figure too far to draw.
- Graph Story QuestGrade 8Read a short story (a walk, a filling tub, a cooling soup) and sketch its graph by dragging the dot that ends each part up, down or level — steeper means faster, and every sketch that tells the story is accepted.
- Growth GardenGrade 8Stack each day's leaves on a plant and watch the bar tops plot themselves — equal steps line up straight, doubling curves away, and you lock in which growth is linear.
Common Questions
How do I teach patterns to my child?
Start with objects, such as red and blue blocks in an AB pattern. Ask your child to say the pattern out loud, then add the next block. Next, switch to numbers. Write the gap between each pair of numbers to find the rule. Then ask your child to make a pattern for you to solve.
What grade do kids learn patterns?
Repeating patterns start in kindergarten and grade 1. Number patterns and rules are in grades 2 to 4. In grade 4, kids make a pattern from a rule. Patterns with variables and linear growth are grades 6 to 8.
What is a common pattern mistake?
Kids often assume every pattern adds the same number. In 2, 4, 7, 11, the gaps are 2, 3 and 4. They grow by one each time, so the next gap is 5 and the next number is 16. Always write the gaps before you guess the rule.
Which pattern game should my child start with?
For grade 1, try Pattern Picnic or Pattern Parade. For grades 2 to 4, try Sequence Sprint, which uses number patterns. For grades 4 to 6, try Input Output Table, where kids find the hidden rule of a machine.
Are these pattern games free?
Yes. They are free, with no ads, no in-app purchases and no sign-up. Play in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
