Summer Math for Rising 8th Graders

An 8-week plan for a child starting 8th grade in the fall: about 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Weeks 1 to 6 review 7th grade skills. Weeks 7 and 8 are a first look at 8th grade. It uses 30 free games that run in the browser, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to use it

Each day, your child picks any game from this week's list and plays for about 10 minutes.
Then they colour one box on the calendar. The calendar has no dates, so it never runs out.
Skipping a day, or a whole week, is fine. Just pick up where you left off. There is nothing to catch up on.

Week 1: Proportions and percents

What it practises: Unit rates with fractions, interest, markups and percent change.

Week 2: Rational numbers

What it practises: Ordering and computing with negative fractions and decimals.

Week 3: Probability and sampling

What it practises: Chance of two events, probability models and samples.

Week 4: Equations and inequalities

What it practises: Equivalent expressions, two-step equations and inequalities.

Week 5: Angles, triangles and circles

What it practises: Angle relationships, building triangles and the area of a circle.

Week 6: Area, surface area and slices

What it practises: Area of composite shapes, surface area and cross sections of solids.

Week 7: Slope and functionsfirst look at 8th grade

What it practises: Slope, lines and reading graphs of functions, the core of 8th grade.

Week 8: Exponents and the Pythagorean theoremfirst look at 8th grade

What it practises: Exponent rules, scientific notation, square roots and right triangles.
