Summer Math for Rising 6th Graders

An 8-week plan for a child starting 6th grade in the fall: about 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Weeks 1 to 6 review 5th grade skills. Weeks 7 and 8 are a first look at 6th grade. It uses 28 free games that run in the browser, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to use it

Each day, your child picks any game from this week's list and plays for about 10 minutes.
Then they colour one box on the calendar. The calendar has no dates, so it never runs out.
Skipping a day, or a whole week, is fine. Just pick up where you left off. There is nothing to catch up on.

Week 1: Order of operations and expressions

What it practises: Which step comes first, and writing and using simple expressions.

Week 2: Adding and subtracting fractions

What it practises: Unlike denominators, estimating fraction sums and simplifying.

Week 3: Multiplying and dividing fractions

What it practises: A fraction of a fraction, and dividing with fractions.

Week 4: Decimals

What it practises: Comparing and rounding decimals, and decimals in metric units.

Week 5: Volume and the coordinate plane

What it practises: Volume of boxes, and plotting points and shapes on a grid.

Week 6: Line plots and unit conversion

What it practises: Reading line plots and converting between units.

Week 7: Ratios and ratesfirst look at 6th grade

What it practises: Ratio tables and unit rates, a main topic of 6th grade.

Week 8: Percents and negative numbersfirst look at 6th grade

What it practises: Percent as "out of 100", and numbers below zero.
