Summer Math for Rising 3rd Graders

An 8-week plan for a child starting 3rd grade in the fall: about 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Weeks 1 to 6 review 2nd grade skills. Weeks 7 and 8 are a first look at 3rd grade. It uses 29 free games that run in the browser, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to use it

Each day, your child picks any game from this week's list and plays for about 10 minutes.
Then they colour one box on the calendar. The calendar has no dates, so it never runs out.
Skipping a day, or a whole week, is fine. Just pick up where you left off. There is nothing to catch up on.

Week 1: Adding and subtracting in your head

What it practises: Fast facts to 20, making 10 and near doubles.

Week 2: Place value to 1,000

What it practises: Hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form, and putting numbers in order.

Week 3: Regrouping

What it practises: Adding and subtracting bigger numbers in columns, including carrying and borrowing.

Week 4: Money

What it practises: Counting coins, making a dollar and making change.

Week 5: Clocks and rulers

What it practises: Telling time to 5 minutes, measuring length and picking the right unit.

Week 6: Graphs and data

What it practises: Reading bar graphs, pictographs and tally charts.

Week 7: Multiplying as equal groupsfirst look at 3rd grade

What it practises: Equal groups and arrays, where 3rd-grade times tables begin.

Week 8: First fractions, rounding and areafirst look at 3rd grade

What it practises: Naming a fraction, rounding to the nearest ten and counting squares for area.
