Summer Math for Rising 5th Graders

An 8-week plan for a child starting 5th grade in the fall: about 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Weeks 1 to 6 review 4th grade skills. Weeks 7 and 8 are a first look at 5th grade. It uses 27 free games that run in the browser, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to use it

  • Each day, your child picks any game from this week's list and plays for about 10 minutes.
  • Then they colour one box on the calendar. The calendar has no dates, so it never runs out.
  • Skipping a day, or a whole week, is fine. Just pick up where you left off. There is nothing to catch up on.

Week 1: Multiplying bigger numbers

What it practises: Multi-digit multiplying with the area model, and "times as many".

Week 2: Long division

What it practises: Dividing bigger numbers and what to do with a remainder.

Week 3: Factors and multiples

What it practises: Factor pairs, multiples and prime numbers.

Week 4: Equivalent fractions

What it practises: Fractions that are worth the same, simplifying, and comparing fractions.

Week 5: Adding fractions and tenths

What it practises: Adding and subtracting fractions with the same bottom number, and decimals in tenths.

Week 6: Angles and units

What it practises: Naming and measuring angles, lines and rays, and converting metric units.

Week 7: Fractions with different bottomsfirst look at 5th grade

What it practises: Adding fractions with unlike denominators and multiplying fractions, both 5th-grade work.

Week 8: Volume, graphs and order of operationsfirst look at 5th grade

What it practises: Volume of a box, plotting points, and which step to do first.

Summer math calendar: rising 5th grade

Colour one box each day you play for about 10 minutes. Missed a day? That's fine. Just colour the next box when you play again.
