Summer Math for Rising 4th Graders

An 8-week plan for a child starting 4th grade in the fall: about 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Weeks 1 to 6 review 3rd grade skills. Weeks 7 and 8 are a first look at 4th grade. It uses 29 free games that run in the browser, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to use it

  • Each day, your child picks any game from this week's list and plays for about 10 minutes.
  • Then they colour one box on the calendar. The calendar has no dates, so it never runs out.
  • Skipping a day, or a whole week, is fine. Just pick up where you left off. There is nothing to catch up on.

Week 1: Times tables

What it practises: Multiplication facts up to 10 × 10, shown as arrays and played fast.

Week 2: Division facts

What it practises: Sharing into equal groups and the division facts that match the times tables.

Week 3: Rounding and estimating

What it practises: Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 and checking an answer by estimating.

Week 4: Fractions

What it practises: Reading fractions, comparing them and finding them on a number line.

Week 5: Area and perimeter

What it practises: Area as rows of squares, and perimeter as the distance around.

Week 6: Time and measuring

What it practises: Elapsed time, reading scales for mass and measuring liquid.

Week 7: Multiplying bigger numbersfirst look at 4th grade

What it practises: Multi-digit multiplying with the area model, and factor pairs.

Week 8: Equivalent fractions and anglesfirst look at 4th grade

What it practises: Fractions that are worth the same, and naming angles: two big ideas of 4th grade.

Colour one box each day you play for about 10 minutes. Missed a day? That's fine. Just colour the next box when you play again.
