Summer Math for Rising 1st Graders

An 8-week plan for a child starting 1st grade in the fall: about 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Weeks 1 to 6 review kindergarten skills. Weeks 7 and 8 are a first look at 1st grade. It uses 24 free games that run in the browser, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to use it

Each day, your child picks any game from this week's list and plays for about 10 minutes.
Then they colour one box on the calendar. The calendar has no dates, so it never runs out.
Skipping a day, or a whole week, is fine. Just pick up where you left off. There is nothing to catch up on.
Our games start at grade 1, so the kindergarten review weeks use the gentlest ones. Sit nearby for the first few days.

Week 1: Counting objects

What it practises: Counting a group one by one and saying how many, and reading small amounts at a glance.

Week 2: More, fewer and in order

What it practises: Telling which group or number is bigger, and first, second, third.

Week 3: Flat shapes

What it practises: Naming circles, triangles, squares and rectangles, and putting shapes together.

Week 4: Repeating patterns

What it practises: Finding what repeats and saying what comes next.

Week 5: Making 10

What it practises: The pairs of numbers that make 10, using ten-frames and number bonds.

Week 6: Adding and taking away

What it practises: Small addition and subtraction facts.

Week 7: Counting by 2s, 5s and 10sfirst look at 1st grade

What it practises: Skip counting, a 1st-grade skill and the first step toward times tables.

Week 8: Length, coins and clocksfirst look at 1st grade

What it practises: Comparing lengths, naming coins and reading the hour on a clock.
